Asatru and Heathen Prayers in Gothic

I observe a lot of demand for material in Gothic for Asatru practitioners which are inspired by the Visigoths and/or Ostrogoths and want to use Gothic as a liturgical language in their services with groups or as individuals. For these people I have translated Asatru prayers which can be used for ritualistic purposes. For the pronunciation see the pronunciation page. People are free to spread these prayers in Gothic for personal use, it is allowed to put it on website when a reference to this page is included. Only the Prayer of Gaut is currently supported by an mp3 recording.

If one wants to use Gaut instead of Odin, instead of the word “Wodan” in the Gothic texts, the word “Gaut” should be used.

A special thanks to Daniel Lakovski and Austin Yorks for their recordings of these prayers which can be used to recite and practice the pronunciation of them. They can also be found on SoundCloud.

The blot

For the Blot, a ritual involving drinking mead, the following phrase could be used:

Listen to this phrase

“Ik drigka þata þus” (I drink this for you)

In the blot, the following prayer is used:

Sigrdrifa Prayer “Hail to the Gods and to the Goddesses as well; Hail Earth that gives to all men.”
This prayer in Gothic is:

(Listen to the Blot)

“Hailai du guþam jah Gudeinjom; Haila du airþai sei gibiþ allaim mannam.”

The following prayers are from Hoen Falker from the Mexican branch of Odinism, who asked this poem to be translated for Asatru rituals. I share them here so that more Odinists which follow a Visigothic tradition can use this:

Chant to the Great One-Eyed
To you father of all

Lord of ravens and wolfs

Charm and magic in your words

Biting joy in your irony
I expose lyrics in your honor

My humor and faith I offer

Lightning that illuminates

In my soul lies your poetry
Wodanaz Uuoden Wodan

The sowed fields

Of your warriors are

Full of glory and vengeance
Wings of black raven

Ride in the skies

Blessed are they

Under the protection of your gaze
You great One-Eyed God

Giver of ecstasies

Lord of fury

And recovered strength
Blue cloak is your cape

Swift and veil your saddle

Lord of all the runes

Victory is your home
May the Visigoth tribe

Your blessing receive

Where ever they are

May your call resound
In all Midgaard arise

Your Odinist Visigoths

Crossing Valleys and Oceans

Your spirituality will be preserved.

Original prayers for a Gothic tradition

For Asatru practitioners which want to use a Gothic tradition, apart from translations original texts especially designed for the Gothic tradition might be useful. Here I ‘ll give some texts which I’ve composed, based on the information available of Gods like Gaut (Gothic equivalent of Odin) and Fairguneis (Gothic equivalent of Thor).

Short prayer for Gaut

O Gaut, first Goth

Hero of battles, demi-God/Æs,

Father of Humul, the king of Danes

You are the beginning, first in lineage

Origin of our/the Gothic people

Make me/us strong

Listen to this prayer 1

Listen to this prayer 2

Maurgus Bida Gauta

O Gaut, frumista Guta

Ussatein þiudos unsaraizos/Gutiskaizos

Swinþnai mik/uns

A short prayer for Fairguneis

O Fairguneis, the power of thunder you possess

You enlighten the night, and you bring us light

The fire you give us to give power and strength

Make me/us strong

Listen to this prayer

Maurgus Bida Fairgunja

O Fairguni, maht þunris aiht

Swinþnai mik/uns

Short Prayer for Teiws

O Teiws, God of wisdom

Brigger of Justice and of all the wise things in this world

Help me to become a wise (person),

God of knowledge,

Make me strong

Maurgus Bida Teiwa

O Teiw, Guþ handugeins

Briggand garaihteins jah allaizo handugaizo waihte in þamma fairhwau

Hilp meina du wairþan handugs/handugo
